Grandfather's letters

Seeing this letter takes me back to the time where I would be able to listen to his wisdom, touch the stiff but loving face of my grandfather. We all called him Tom papa. He loved English literature, and one of the many things he loved to do, along with religiously sending us birthday cards every year, was writing letters.

He would write to my dad, and include articles and other interesting facts for my sister to read and to cultivate the habit of reading and writing. I was a pea sized lad then, (not much difference now though) ; the letter had important news and updates on how things were back at our hometown.

This is all I have of him at the moment. No images, to even show his face that expresses all the pain he's been through all his life. Although the letter says 2005, and feels not too long ago, in reality it was 15 years ago.

I don't have many memories of my grandfather and I don't remotely even remember most of the ones I've had with him. But I will always remember him as the grandfather who cycled even when he was 84. Did things he loved, like buying fish even when his wife (my grandmother) complained about cooking it. Passionate about gardening, which is visible in Dad & me. The man who always made time for his kids, especially for his grandchildren in every way possible.

I'm fortunate to have picked up his habit of writing letters and his love for English literature. I hope to be as kind as he was. I wish I didn't have to have a last memory with him. But that's the thing with growing older, you see your parents age and your grandparents pass away. Sad truth about life.
